HARRISON, N.Y. – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team earned its first dual match victory of 2016 on Saturday, sweeping the doubles point en route to a 6-1 win over Fordham at Life Time Athletic.
“Tonight's match was a good start to our Atlantic 10 season,” head coach Ian Crookenden said. “We had better doubles play with the match at Navy under our belts.”
Seniors Renier Moolman and Andres Urrea were 6-0 winners in the first doubles flight before freshman Andre Fick and Dan Tan clinched the point with a 6-2 win in the third. Junior Kyle Chalmers and sophomore Peter Dewitt finished off the doubles sweep with a 7-6 (1) win in the second flight.
Moolman won his singles match as well, dispatching Tomas Cosmai, 6-2, 6-4, in the top flight, while Urrea fell in a three-set match in the second. Chalmers was a 6-1, 6-3 winner in the third flight, while Fick dominated Joe Kavaloski, 6-0, 6-2, in the fifth.
Junior Tristan Boustany and senior Kevin Gates were winners in the fourth and sixth flights, respectively; Boustany was a 6-4, 6-2 winner, while Gates took a 6-2, 7-6 (2) result.
“Everyone played competitively tonight,” Crookenden said. “Despite a terribly slow start, our captain, Andres, made a game comeback before falling short in the third. We are looking forward to keeping our momentum next Friday against Lafayette.”
The Hawks will host the Leopards on February 12 at the Springton Indoor Tennis Club in Media, Pennsylvania. The match is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
