DAYTON, Ohio – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team fell to Dayton, 7-0, at the Five Seasons Sports Club on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore Peter Dewitt and freshman Dan Tan earned a victory for the Hawks in the third doubles flight, but the Flyers won the remaining matches to come away with the win.
Dewitt and Tan held off Simon Jayaram and Bernardo Sanson in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (5), but the Flyers earned wins in each of the first two flights to take the point.
Dayton (12-3) won the first five singles flights in straight sets, but senior Kevin Gates took his sixth-flight match to a supertiebreaker before succumbing to Lorenzo Rollhauser, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8.
“Even good teams have bad days, and for the Hawks, today was one that started slow and then fell further behind,” head coach Ian Crookenden said. “Only Kevin was able to pull himself back into his match and that was with tremendous heart and not necessarily because of good play.
“We lost to a very good indoor team and the key will be how we bounce back tomorrow against Saint Louis.”
Saint Joseph's (6-5) remains in Dayton for a neutral site matchup with the Billikens on Saturday.
