Box Score STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – A six-goal Seahawks run to open the second half would prove to be the difference as the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team fell to Wagner, 11-9, on Saturday afternoon at Hameline Field. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 1-3 on the season while the Seahawks improve to 1-4.
Junior attacker Sarah Smith scored three goals and added an assist to lead the Hawks on the offensive end of the field while junior attacker Nora McCallion registered two goals and an assist and senior midfielder Mallory Grey dished out a game-high three helpers.
Trailing 6-4 coming out of the halftime break, Wagner scored six consecutive goals that spanned 8:25 to jump ahead, 10-6, with 20:22 to play. Shea Gegan scored the final five of those six goals.
Saint Joseph's found momentum as Grey found McCallion (14:24) and Smith (13:28) just 56 seconds apart to close the Hawks' defecit to two goals, 10-8.
However, Wagner took advantage of an SJU yellow card and converted on the EMO with 7:34 to play to jump back ahead by three goals, 11-8.
Freshman midfielder Ally Beck scored her first collegiate goal to bring the Hawks to within two scores, 11-9, with 1:40 remaining in regulation, but that score would stand as time expired.
For the game, Saint Joseph's held a 24-21 edge in shots and 25-21 advantage in ground balls, while both teams earned an even 11 draw controls apiece. Wagner earned five free-position opportunities and converted on three of them during the 6-0 run that opened the second half.
Grey, McCallion, and senior defender Caroline Hagan recorded four ground balls each while Grey and Hagan also caused two turnovers apiece. Junior midfielder Maggie Egan registered a team-high three draw controls.
Senior goalkeeper Genevieve Giblin (1-3) made seven saves in the full 60:00.
Wagner and Saint Joseph's were tied, 3-3, with 14:58 remaining in the first half before the Hawks tore off on three straight goals from freshman midfielder Hayley Sabol, sophomore midfielder Aly Gormley, and Smith to own a 6-3 lead with 6:17 to play in the first 30:00.
The Seahawks added one more score (4:27) to close their defecit to two, 6-4, heading into the halftime break.
The Hawks return home to host Meiji University in an exhibition match-up slated for this Monday, March 7 at 1:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field. Saint Joseph's returns to regular-season action the following day when the Hawks host Penn on Tuesday, March 8 at 1:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field.
