CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team saw its run at the Atlantic 10 Championship come to an end on Friday as the Hawks fell to Richmond, 4-1, in the quarterfinals at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
Richmond took the doubles point, with wins in both the first and second flights. Tristan Boustany and Kyle Chalmers were leading their third-flight tilt, 4-3, when play was stopped.
The Spiders doubled their lead with a win in the fourth flight, but Chalmers got Saint Joseph's on the board with a 6-2, 6-3 win in the third flight. Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, Richmond came away with wins in both the first and second flights to lock up the win.
Andre Fick and Kevin Gates were both leading their matches at the time of the stoppage; Fick held a 6-3, 3-4 advantage in the fifth flight, while Gates was ahead, 7-6 (9), 1-2, in the sixth.
“A much tougher battle than the first time, but we must concede that Richmond was the better team,” said head coach Ian Crookenden. “Losing the doubles point set the tone; though we won at three, where Kyle played a superb match, and we had first sets won at five and six, we could not stem the tide at four, one, and finally, two.
“I am proud of the effort and fight the Hawks have shown at every position of the match and we can be proud of this year's results. The Hawk Will Never Die!”
The Hawks finished their campaign at 11-12, marking the fifth consecutive season the squad has reached double-digits in wins, extending its previous best mark set a season ago.
