Men' Tennis Falls at George Mason, 5-2

FAIRFAX, Va. – Junior Kyle Chalmers and sophomore Peter Dewitt earned points in singles play, but the Saint Joseph's men's tennis team ultimately fell to George Mason, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon.

The Hawks fell behind early, as the Patriots took 6-0 wins in the first and third doubles flights to secure the day's first point. George Mason also earned wins in the first and third singles flights to take a 3-0 lead.

Chalmers fell behind in his second flight tilt, dropping first set by a 6-1 score, but he bounced back to win the last two sets, 6-3, 6-4, and get the Hawks back into the match. Unfortunately for SJU, a three-set win in the fourth flight locked up the victory for GMU.

Dewitt would wrap up the afternoon for the Hawks with a 2-6, 6-3, 12-10 win in a supertiebreaker.

“A look at the doubles scores will indicate the kind of day we had,” head coach Ian Crookenden said. “We had a horrendous start that finally turned into the competitive contest that should occur between two evenly-matched teams. Good conditions produced some high-quality singles performances and a much more respectable final score than the debacle of a start.”

The Hawks will return home for the remainder of the regular season. SJU hosts Villanova on Tuesday and La Salle on Wednesday before Rider and Binghamton visit in the season finale on April 10. The Atlantic 10 Championship begins on Thursday, April 14, in Charlottesville, Virginia.
