Box Score NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Saint Joseph's junior midfielder Matt Crawford scored twice in just under three minutes and junior goalkeeper Greg O'Connell turned in his fourth shutout in five matches to lead the Hawks to a 2-0 win over Central Connecticut State at the CCSU Soccer Field on Saturday evening. With the win, the Hawks improve to 3-4-1 overall while the Blue Devils fall to 1-5-2. SJU is now 3-1-0 away from Sweeney Field this fall and has won three consecutive road contests.
Senior captains Bliss Harris and Mike Stuski assisted on Crawford's first goal of the night, which the junior midfielder headed in from inside the box at the 64:42 mark.
Just under three minutes later, the Hawks drew a foul inside the box, and Crawford converted the penalty kick at the 67:41 mark to put Saint Joseph's up, 2-0.
Crawford's two-goal performance marks the first multi-goal match of his career.
O'Connell (3-4-1) made six saves, including four in the first 43:30, in a full-match effort for his fourth career shutout.
The Hawks have now blanked their opposition four of the last five times out. Saint Joseph's received full-match efforts from the defensive core of Stuski, junior Ben Zambetti, and sophomore Eddie McCusker, while fellow defender Tom Santilli played 82 minutes in his fourth start of the season. Harris and senior classmate Sam Irvin also contributed full-match efforts from the midfield.
For the match, Central Connecticut held a 15-12 edge in shots, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Blue Devils were awarded 12 of the match's 14 total corner kick opportunities, while each team was whistled for 11 fouls apiece.
Crawford led the Hawks with a team-best five shots, landing a team-best two on goal, while Harris landed one of his three shots on target.
Saint Joseph's returns to action at St. John's this Tuesday, September 27. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Belson Stadium in Queens, N.Y. The match will be streamed via ESPN3.
