Gingrich's Historic Day Lifts Hawks Past Northeastern, 2-1

PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's senior midfielder Emily Gingrich scored twice, and in the process set new program records for career goals (35) and points (84), as the Hawks topped Northeastern, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field.

Entering the day tied with Jen Pfeiffer (33 goals, 2008-11) and Mo Hawkins (33 goals, 2010-13) for the all-time lead in goals, Gingrich quickly broke the tie with a goal in the second minute and later scored the eventual game-winner in the 82nd minute to pass SJU Hall of Famer Ellen Stenrud (82 points, 1996-99) to become the Hawks' all-time points leader.

Opening the game as the aggressors, the Hawks took the lead 1:18 into the game. Off a corner kick from teammate Paige Bergman, Gingrich found the ball in the middle of the Northeastern box and snuck a shot to the left side of the goal to put SJU up.

The Huskies (2-3-1) would answer back to tie the game at 1-1 at 26:49 as Breeana Koemans headed in a crossing pass by teammate Kayla Cappuzzo.

The game would remain tied for more than 50 minutes before Gingrich broke the deadlock. Off another corner kick from Bergman, Gingrich settled under the ball at the far right post and followed through with the go-ahead tally to put her team up, 2-1, with 8:29 to play.

Despite falling behind, the Huskies pushed the pace of play for the remainder of the game. The Saint Joseph's defense and goalkeeper Cameron Perrott answered back though to hold Northeastern off the board and preserve the victory.

For the game, Northeastern held a 13-9 edge in shots and 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Individually, Perrott made a game-high four saves to improve to 4-1-0 on the year. Gingrich, a three-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference standout, currently ranks first all-time in goals, points and shots (252) and is second in assists (14) behind only Stenrud (18).

Saint Joseph's (4-1-) returns to action on Friday when it hosts Villanova at 7 p.m.
