RICHMOND, Va. - Saint Joseph's season came to a close on Friday night as the seventh seeded Hawks fell to sixth seed VCU, 1-0, in the semifinals of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship at Sports Backers Field.
In a match that featured multiple scoring opportunities on both sides, it was VCU that capitalized on its best chance as Megan Dell converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute. Dell swiftly struck the decisive blow off a handball call on the Hawks in their own box at 70:52.
Saint Joseph's would have two corner kicks from there, but could not generate a shot on goal.
Individually, junior Grace Bendon made a game-high seven saves for SJU to improve her team record for saves in the A-10 Championship to 35.
Kasia Kwitnieski, Michaela Finneyfrock, Paige Bergman, Taylor Ryan, Bridget Galen, Lindsay Walder and Morgan Bower each recorded a shot for the Hawks.
Saint Joseph's seniors of Lauren Dimes and Walder capped their careers as the first class to advance to the A-10 Championship four-straight years. Overall, the Hawks wrap up the year with an 11-6-3 record.
The Rams (11-5-3) will face top seed La Salle on Sunday for the A-10 Championship.
