Men’s Tennis Tops Carnegie Mellon, 6-1

HARMARVILLE, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team earned its first dual match victory of 2017 on Saturday, topping Carnegie Mellon, 6-1. Senior Kyle Chalmers, sophomore Dan Tan, and freshman Beekman Schaeffer each earned a pair of victories on the day.

Chalmers and Tan teamed up for a 6-4 win in the first doubles flight before Chalmers gutted out a 6-0, 6-7 (4), 6-4 first-flight singles win and Tan battled back for a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 win in the third flight.

Schaeffer and senior Valentijn van Erven locked down the doubles point for the Hawks, claiming a 6-3 win in the third flight. Schaeffer then claimed his fifth-flight tilt in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4.

In the second flight, sophomore Andre Fick was a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 winner, while junior Peter Dewitt won his fourth-flight contest in a supertiebreaker, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5.

“It was the perfect kind of match for this stage in our season,” head coach Ian Crookenden said. “CMU is a strong program of talented players that challenged our squad to rise to a competitive level, and even with two starters out, the team responded. A good opening conference match with Duquesne tomorrow can be expected.”

The Hawks and the A-10 rival Dukes will meet in Pittsburgh on Sunday.
