Men's Tennis Cruises Past St. Bonaventure, 6-1

MERION STATION, Pa. – A dominant doubles performance and wins in five out of six singles flights helped the Saint Joseph's men's tennis team cruise past St. Bonaventure, 6-1, at the SJU Tennis Complex on Saturday.

Senior Kyle Chalmers and sophomore Tim Stierle got things started by winning their doubles match at love. The pair also made quick work of their singles opponents, with Stierle winning the first flight, 6-0, 6-2, and Chalmers claiming a 6-3, 6-2 win in the second.

Junior Peter Dewitt and sophomore Dan Tan sealed the doubles point with their 6-1 win in the third flight. Dewitt also notched a 6-0, 6-2 win in the sixth singles flight as well.

Senior Valentijn van Erven and sophomore Andre Fick wrapped up the doubles sweep with a 6-4 win in the second flight. Fick then fell in his third-flight singles match, but senior Tristan Boustany and freshman Beekman Schaeffer earned singles wins to finish off the day for the Hawks. Boustany rolled to a 6-2, 6-3 win in the fifth, while Schaeffer took a 6-4, 6-2 result in the fourth.

“Quick wins at numbers one, two, and six got everyone still playing a little more relaxed, and Beekman extended his unbeaten season to put is in the win column on the conference scoreboard,” head coach Ian Crookenden said. “I expect a tougher match tomorrow, but I feel we are in a good state of mind to rise to the challenge of that occasion.”

The Hawks are right back in action on Sunday when they host another A-10 foe in George Mason at 11:00 a.m.
