Dunkley and Johnson Earn 2020 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Honors

Saint Joseph's Slam Dunkley (men's rowing) and Tim Johnson (baseball) have been named 2020 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars, Diverse: Issues In Higher Education announced.

A four-year letterwinner, Dunkley has been a part of the team's Varsity 8 since his freshman season. As a rookie, Dunkley was a member of the Varsity 8 earn a silver medal at the 2017 Dad Vail Regatta, and helped the team capture the Bergen Cup, and place first at the Knecht Cup and the Murphy Cup. Guiding the Hawks to a third place finish in the D Level Final at the 2017 IRA Championship, he has been a standout in the classroom, earning SJU Athletic Director's Honor Roll.

A recent graduate from Annandale, Virginia, Johnson appeared in 52 games for the Hawks, making 20 starts.  He hit .265 with a .353 slugging percentage and a pair of runs batted in during his abbreviated senior campaign.  An outstanding student, Johnson was named to multiple Atlantic 10 Commissioner's and SJU Athletic DIrector's Honor Rolls, and this marks his third appearance on the list of Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars.

Diverse: Issues In Higher Education established the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars Awards "to honor undergraduate students of color who best exemplify academic and athletic achievement. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe, Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, U.S. colleges and universities are invited to participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability and academic performance, Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars demonstrate a commitment to community service and student leadership."

Each Sports Scholar must be a non-freshman who competes in an intercollegiate sport, maintains a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20, and is active on campus or in the community.
