KINGSTON, R.I. – Saint Joseph's
Taylor Funk scored a career-high 29 points, but Rhode Island rallied late to force overtime and pulled away in the extra frame for an 85-77 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Ryan Center.
How It Happened
• Saint Joseph's opened a 19-11 lead on a layup by
Cameron Brown at 12:15.
• Down 27-21, Rhode Island put together a 13-2 run to open a 34-29 advantage on a layup by Malik Martin at 4:22.
• The Hawks finished the first half on an 8-2 run to take a 37-36 lead into halftime behind a layup by
Jack Forrest in the final minute.
• The game remained tight throughout the second half as neither team made it more than a two-possession lead, as Rhode Island took a 65-64 lead on a layup by Fatts Russell with 1:07 to play.
• Funk answered 18 seconds later to put SJU ahead 67-65, and following a defensive stop,
Jordan Hall extended the lead to 69-65 with a pair of free throws with 20 seconds remaining.
• A Jalen Carey jumper brought Rhode Island to within 69-67.
• Fouled on the inbounds, Brown went 1-2 from the line to push the Hawks' lead to 70-67 with eight ticks left.
• On the ensuing play, Russell was fouled on a three-point attempt and converted all three free throws to even the score at 70-70.
• Saint Joseph's game-winning shot at the buzzer missed its mark.
• In overtime, Rhode Island scored the first two baskets, but a Funk three got the Hawks back to within one, 74-73.
• Forrest brought Saint Joseph's within 80-77 with a three-pointer with under a minute to play.
• Rhode Island sealed the victory in its next possession as D.J. Johnson answered with a three-pointer late in the shot clock.
