PHILADELPHIA – Playing its first dual match of the season, the USciences men's tennis team defeated District of Columbia 5-2 at the Hecht Center on Sunday.
Needing to win only one doubles match to earn the point due to the fact that the Firebirds only have five student-athletes, Jakob Kalteis and Borna Markusic got the Devils on the board with a 6-4 decision in Kalteis' first-ever collegiate doubles bout.
University of the Sciences then took care of business in singles play, winning three of the five matches to secure the three-point victory.
Kalteis and Markusic both made it two wins on the day by sweeping their respective third and fifth flight opponents, which gave Kalteis his first collegiate singles win.
Eli Gan-Dy also won his first career collegiate singles match, via straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (2), at the fourth flight.
Oscar Serra nearly made the final 6-1, falling in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the No. 1 singles, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (6), to a semifinalist from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regionals.
University of the Sciences plays its second and final dual match of the fall next Sunday at St. Thomas Aquinas.
