AMHERST, Mass. – A goal in the final minute of the first overtime period was the difference as the 11th-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team fell to #21 UMass, 1-0, at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (10-4 overall, 4-1 Atlantic 10) dominated the run of play throughout the game, earning a 10-2 advantage in shots in the first half before outshooting the Minutewomen 9-1 in the second. The Hawks also held an 11-4 edge in penalty corner opportunities by the end of regulation, holding UMass to half its season average.
• The story of the game was Minutewoman goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder, who singlehandedly kept her team in the contest with a series of key saves.
• In the extra frame, the Hawks maintained some pressure early, but on the hosts' second corner opportunity of overtime, Steph Gottwals scooped up the remnants of a blocked Jess Beech effort and fired high into the cage to net the game-winner.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Saint Joseph's held a 22-8 shot advantage for the game, with a 16-6 edge in shots on goal. The Hawks, who lead the nation in corners per game, earned 12 total corners to six for the Minutewomen.
• Van Tonder finished with 14 saves for UMass (10-4 overall, 3-1 Atlantic 10), blowing away her previous season high of 10.
