MERION STATION, Pa. – The 11th-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team turned in another dominant performance in routing Davidson, 6-0, at Ellen Ryan Field on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (12-4 overall, 5-1 Atlantic 10) controlled play from the start, but it took until early in the second quarter to convert possession into a goal. On a penalty corner,
Katy Benton found
Sol Borensztein, who fired low past the keeper for a 1-0 lead that the Hawks would take into halftime.
• The floodgates opened in the third quarter as
Cassidy Atchison converted a penalty stroke before she and Benton set up
Freke van Tilburg on a corner to make it a 3-0 lead midway through the frame.
• In the fourth, the Hawks put their passing skills on display as
Kate Crist sent a ball into the circle for
Anna Miller to put home for a 4-0 lead less than two minutes into the quarter. Ten minutes later, it was
Aiden Drabick with the pass and
Lily Santi with the finish; Santi would then close out the scoring by earning and converting a penalty stroke with three minutes to play.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• The Hawks held Davidson (2-13 overall, 0-5 Atlantic 10) without a shot; it is the second time this season that SJU has held an opponent to zero shots in a game (Saint Louis, 10/3).
• Saint Joseph's ripped off 24 attempts of its own and earned 15 penalty corners without conceding one of either to the Wildcats.
• On top of Santi's four-point afternoon, Atchison had a three-point day while Benton totaled a pair of assists to regain a share of the league lead.
• Cato Rowell made two saves in the first half for Davidson, while Genna Barge came on at halftime and made six stops.
• The win clinches a spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship for SJU, which will host the event November 5 and 6 at Ellen Ryan Field.
