KATY, Texas – Saint Joseph's women's basketball (1-4) couldn't withstand a fourth quarter push by Old Dominion (3-2) in the opening game of the Van Chancellor Classic on Friday and fell, 67-50. Rookie
Laila Fair posted her best collegiate game with career marks in points and rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- ODU tallied the first nine points of the game before a SJU timeout at the 4:41 mark. The teams traded four points each through the remainder of the frame for a 13-4 lead for the Monarchs.
- St. Joe's took the first five points of the second period before six straight for ODU. SJU then rallied a 9-2 run over a 3:30 span to pull within three at 21-18. Old Dominion took five of the final seven points scored in the half for a 26-20 lead.
- The Hawks knotted the game in the third period with 3:23 left at 37 all, but finished the stanza behind 42-41.
- With a 5-4 advantage over the opening 2:36 of the fourth period, SJU tied the game again at 46. Old Dominion answered with a 21-4 margin over the rest of the game, including a 10-0 differential over the final 2:56 to take the game, 67-50.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
- St. Joe's shot 35.3% (18-of-51) overall, 30.0% (6-of-20) from deep, and 80.0% (8-of-10) from the line.
- ODU went 43.5% (27-of-62) from the field, 42.9% (6-of14) from three, and 70.0% (7-of-10) from the stripe.
- The Monarchs won the rebounding (40-31) and turnover margin (9-15) battles.
- Fair led the Hawks with a career best 12 points and six rebounds on a 5-of-7 day. She also added two blocks and a steal, the first of each for her career.
- Graduate student Alayna Gribble finished with 11 points, going 4-of-9 overall and 3-of-6 from deep.
