Women’s Basketball Shows Resiliency in Win Over Yale

PHILADELPHIA – After leading by as many as 19 points, Saint Joseph's (2-6) found itself down by five points with 3:28 left in the game and claimed a 9-1 scoring differential to defeat Yale (5-4), 52-49 inside Hagan Arena on Saturday afternoon.
 
Graduate student Katie Jekot found her classmate Alayna Gribble in the corner with 2.4 seconds left on the clock for the game-winning triple from the corner.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • St. Joe's ripped off an 11-0 run to start the game over the opening 1:56. Rookie Laila Fair accounted for six on that spurt. The Hawks would go into the media break at the 4:09 mark with an 18-3 lead. SJU would end the initial frame up 23-7. The seven points allowed is the lowest amount in any quarter this season by St. Joe's.
  • Scoring slowed down through the first 5:00 of the second stanza. Yale held a 6-5 advantage during that time for a 28-13 Hawks' lead. After a Yale three pointer, the Hawks ended the period on a 7-2 spurt over the final 1:04. Yale's 18 points at the break tied for the least amount allowed by the Hawks this season.
  • Yale outpaced the Crimson & Gray 8-2 to start the third, including a 5-0 run over a 1:54 span up to the first media timeout at 6:39. The Bulldogs tallied the next four points into the second media at 4:12. Yale would finish the third frame with a 19-5 overall advantage in the period to cut the deficit to just one possession at 40-37.
  • Over the initial 4:12 of the fourth, Yale tallied six of the nine points scored to tie the game at 43 apiece. The Bulldogs rallied five-straight points in 43 seconds to take their largest lead of the game at 48-43. St. Joe's answered with nine of the next 10 points for the victory. 
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Hawks shot 39.6% (19-of-48) from the field, 40.0% (8-of-20) from deep, and 60.0% (6-of-10) from the line.
  • Yale went 31.0% (18-of-58) overall, 27.3% (6-of-22) from long range, and 63.6% (7-of-11) from the stripe.
  • Gribble led all scorers with 14 points on a 5-of-12 afternoon, including 4-of-9 from three-point range. She added four rebounds and tied her career mark with four assists.
  • In her first collegiate start, Fair tied her career best in both points (12) and rebounds (6), on an efficient 6-of-9 showing.
  • Jekot filled the stat sheet with 11 points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
