Jekot Pours in 21, Henderson Hits Career High in Women's Basketball's 71-64 Loss at Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Trailing by two, 55-53, midway through the fourth quarter, the Wildcats outscored the Hawks 18-9 in the final 5:27 of regulation to hand the Saint Joseph's women's basketball squad a 71-64 loss at Davidson's John M. Belk Arena on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 5-7 overall (3-7 A-10) while the Wildcats improve to 7-10 overall (4-7 A-10).

Junior guard Katie Jekot poured in a season-high 21 points (7-of-12 FG, 2-of-5 3FG), with 17 of those points coming in the second half, for her third career game with 20 or more points (24 at Dayton in 2018-19, 20 vs. Sacred Heart in 2019-20). Jekot also dished out a team-high four assists on the day to factor into 11 of SJU's 26 field goals.

Entering Sunday's game averaging 12.7 points per game since February 7, sophomore guard Kaliah Henderson broke through for a career-high 17 points (8-of-14 FG), with 11 of those points coming in the first half, for her fourth consecutive double-digit scoring game.

Senior Mary Sheehan chipped in a season-high 14 points (6-of-7 FG), which included a pair of second-half three-pointers (Q3 2:22, Q4 7:47) that kept the Hawks in the game.

How It Happened
Q1 –
The Wildcats jumped out to a 20-10 edge by the end of the first after shooting 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from the field and holding the Hawks to 33.3-percent (4-of-12), including scoreless from deep in three opportunities. Four different Hawks got on the board in the opening 10:00, led by Henderson's four-point effort.

Q2 – The second quarter saw an even 15-15 scoring performance to keep the Wildcats up by 10, 35-25, by the halftime break. Henderson again led the Hawks with a seven-point quarter while junior forward Katie Mayock scored four of her six total points in the second quarter. Davidson shot 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the field in the second en route to shooting 66.7 percent (15-of-21) for the opening half.

Q3 – The Hawks outscored the Wildcats 19-14 in the third quarter to close to within five points, 49-44, through 30:00. Jekot (5) and Sheehan (4) combined for nine points in the opening 4:30 and Henderson hit a jumper at the 2:58 mark to bring SJU within six, 42-36, before Sheehan hit a big three at the 2:22 mark to make it 42-39. The Hawks continued to battle with a jumper from Mayock (1:23) and a three from Jekot (:29) to stay within five, 49-44.

Q4 – The Hawks controlled the first half of the fourth quarter as Henderson hit back-to-back jumpers (9:42, 9:03) to bring the Hawks within one, 49-48. After Davidson responded with a lay-up (8:39), Sheehan hit the game-tying three (7:47) to even it up, 51-51, and back-to-back buckets from senior guard Lula Roig (6:29) and Jekot (5:27) saw the Hawks with a two-point advantage, 55-53, heading into the final 5:27 of play before the Wildcats went on their 18-9 scoring run and held the Hawks to 2-of-6 shooting (1-of-3 3FG) during that span to close the game.
