Baseball Takes Opener at George Washington, 4-1

ARLINGTON, Va. – Four unanswered runs led the Saint Joseph's baseball team past George Washington, 4-1, in the first of a three-game series at Barcroft Park on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• After a quiet start, George Washington (5-2) struck first as Cade Fergus hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left, in the bottom of the third inning.

• Nate Thomas answered in the top of the fourth, hitting his second home run in as many games to draw the Hawks level.

• Saint Joseph's (2-0) went ahead in the fifth after Langston Livingston led off with a double and came around to score when Luca Trigiani reached on an error.

• The Hawks would add a pair of insurance runs in the eighth.  Thomas led off with a single and went to third on a double by Tim Cavanaugh.  Two batters later, Trigiani lofted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Thomas, before pinch runner Ryan Picollo came in on a double by Liam Bendo.

• Ian McCole worked around a hit batsman in the ninth to secure his first save of the season.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Hayden Seig made his season debut for the Hawks, allowing one run on three hits while striking out six in four innings.  Mike Falco tossed two shutout innings and was credited with the win, while McCole did not concede a hit while striking out four in three innings.  All told, the trio fanned 11 Colonials while not allowing a walk.

• Harrison Cohen took the loss for GW, falling to 0-1 after allowing two runs on three hits while walking three and striking out seven in six innings.

• Thomas recorded another multi-hit day, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

HAWK TALK
"A good team win for us today," head coach Fritz Hamburg said.  "We got some outstanding pitching from Hayden, Mike, and then Ian, who shut the door over the final three innings.  Four hits, one run, and no walks issued with 11 strikeouts is a pretty solid effort from those three.

"I was happy to see us battle offensively.  Nate had another big home run to tie the game up and get the momentum back on our side.  It was great to see us extend our lead late.  Luca had two very important at bats for us, breaking the tie with a groundout that scored Lang and and then later with a sac fly that scored Nate.  And Liam's two-out RBI was big.  Those were three very key at bats in the ballgame.

"Certainly happy for the win today and looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow."
