A year after having its season cut short due to the COVID pandemic, the Saint Joseph's softball team is set to return to the field this weekend with five games starting this Friday with a doubleheader at Towson. The Hawks, who return 14 letterwinners and add six newcomers, cap the weekend with a nonconference doubleheader at George Mason on Saturday and a single game at Delaware on Sunday.
Backed by graduated students Sarah Ostaszewski, Caela Abadie, Molly Kapala, and Ashley Stokes, who decided to take advantage of the NCAA Division I Council's ruling to grant an additional year of eligibility for all spring sports student-athletes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Saint Joseph's is looking to prove preseason voters wrong on their sixth place prediction for the Hawks.
Helping Saint Joseph's to the semifinals of the 2019 Atlantic 10 Championship, juniors Kirstin Cox and Taylor Marinelli and sophomore Amanda Herr, Jordan Hinkle and Carly Rybinski are poised to help their team take the next step this season. Sophomores Saige Stutz, Jessica Gaughan, Erica Lawrence, Madison Fife and Alyssa Notarianni had a small sampling of college competition a season ago, but are set for a full season in 2021, including their first games at home at the SJU Softball Field. Joining the Hawks this season, standout transfer from Wright State Payton Baxter and talented rookies Annabella Hawkins, Carli Davy, Emily Siler, Lauren Pscolka and Nicole Bondoc will help Saint Joseph's compete for a top spot in the four-team conference postseason.
For head coach Erin Brooks, this offseason has been unlike any other, but she is excited for the start of the season and knows her team is ready to face any challenges thrown their way.
"They are tremendously resilient and I think that's going to show a lot when we play," said Brooks.
