OLEAN, N.Y. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team earned a split of its doubleheader at St. Bonaventure on Saturday afternoon, falling 6-0 in the opener before claiming the nightcap, 9-7.
GAME 1: St. Bonaventure 6, Saint Joseph's 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
• St. Bonaventure (4-12 overall, 3-4 Atlantic 10) took the lead right out of the gate on a three-run home run by Tyler Kelder.
• The Bonnies would add on with a Branden Myers single in the fifth and a two-run single by Christian Szablewsksi in the sixth.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Elijah Baez allowed one hit while walking six and striking out six in five innings to earn the win for SBU. Donovan Moffat tossed an inning and a third of shutout relief to notch the save.Â
Luke Zimmerman started for SJU and took the loss after being charged with four runs in four and two-thirds innings.
GAME 2: Saint Joseph's 9, St. Bonaventure 7
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (10-8 overall, 5-2 Atlantic 10) was the early aggressor in the second game, as a two-run home run from
Brandon Drapeau staked the Hawks to a 2-0 lead.
•
Brendan Hueth hit a two-run triple in the third, and
Andrew Cossetti followed with a two-run home run to open the lead up to 6-0.
• The hosts would plate four in the bottom half of the inning, but a bases-loaded walk by Drapeau brought home a run to make it 7-4.
• The Bonnies once again answered with a singleton in the bottom of the frame before a
Brian Vance sacrifice fly restored the three-run advantage at 8-5 in the sixth. SBU then cut it to one in the bottom of the inning with a pair of RBI hits.
• Hueth would come in to score on a wild pitch to score an insurance run in the top of the seventh before
Alec Rodriguez came on and retired the side in order to secure the victory.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Rodriguez preserved the win for
Ryan Devine, who allowed five runs – four of them unearned – on six hits in five innings for his second win in as many starts. Moffat took the loss after going three and a third innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits.
• Hueth went 4-for-5 on the day with a pair of triples, two runs batted in, and three runs scored. Cossetti, Drapeau,
Liam Bendo, and
Brett Callahan all chipped in with a pair of hits apiece as well.
UP NEXT
The Hawks and Bonnies will wrap up the series at Fred Handler Park beginning at noon on Sunday.
