PHILADELPHIA – Strong singles play led the Saint Joseph's women's tennis team to a 4-3 win over crosstown rival Drexel on Tuesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Drexel took the early lead with a sweep of the three doubles matches, but
Stow Weiss drew the Hawks level with a 6-1, 6-3 win in the second singles flight.
•
Ireland Amato won the first set of her fifth-flight match, 6-1, before her opponent retired due to injury.Â
Amanda Nava then extended the lead to 3-1 with a 7-5, 6-3 win in the top flight.
• The Dragons earned wins in the third and fourth flights to equalize, but
Sophia Amato finished off a 6-4, 6-4 win in the sixth flight to claim the match victory for Saint Joseph's.

"We rebounded after losing the doubles point, and led by Stow, Amanda, and Ireland, turned the tables on city rival Drexel," head coach
Ian Crookenden said. "On paper, there's no way this could happen, but as I have said to our squad, 'you are playing the ball and not reputations.' Today, fortune smiled on us and our squad was prepared and took advantage of the opportunities presented by two of our opponents having conditioning problems. I couldn't be prouder of the ladies who thoroughly deserved today's victory. A real morale booster as we enter the end of our season."
