MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team fell to Villanova in both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday at Smithson Field. The Wildcats won game one, 16-5, before taking the nightcap 8-2.
GAME 1: Villanova 16, Saint Joseph's 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Villanova (12-2), serving as the home team in the opener, got things started with a pair in the second before opening things up with a six-run third.
•
Tim Cavanaugh got Saint Joseph's (5-5) on the board in the top of the fourth, doubling home
Nate Thomas. An RBI single from
Adam Fine in the top of the sixth then made it an 8-2 game, but the Wildcats put some insurance runs on the board over the next two innings, extended the lead back to eight.
• In the eighth, VU put another six-spot on the board thanks to a two-run single by Ryan Toohers and a grand slam by Dylan McNary.
• Thomas closed out the scoring in the top of the ninth with a three-run home run, his third of the season.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Gordon Graceffo earned the win for Villanova, tossing seven innings and allowing two runs on seven hits.
Luke Zimmerman took the loss for SJU.
• Thomas and
Andrew Cossetti led the Hawks with two hits apiece.
GAME 2: Villanova 8, Saint Joseph's 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Chris Rotondo hit his second three-run home run of the day to get Villanova on the board in the top of the second inning. Pat O'Neill then added an RBI single in the top of the fifth to make it 4-0.
• Zimmerman got the Hawks on the board in the bottom of the sixth as his two-run double scored
Liam Bendo and
Alec Rodriguez to cut the deficit in half.
• The Wildcats got one back on an RBI double by Toohers in the seventh before a three-run eighth set the final margin.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Jimmy Kingsbury allowed two runs on four hits in seven innings to earn the win for VU.
Lucas Rollins took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in four innings while striking out five.
• Bendo notched a two-hit game for the Hawks in the nightcap.
