KINGSTON, R.I. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday, falling in the opener, 7-3, before going down in the nightcap, 8-7.
GAME 1: Rhode Island 7, Saint Joseph's 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Rhode Island (23-22-1 overall, 10-5 Atlantic 10) jumped out to an early lead on a three-run home run by Bully Butler in the bottom of the first. The Rams extended the lead in the third on an RBI single by Sonny Ulliana and a three-run home run by Mark Coley.
• The Hawks would eventually break through in the sixth on a solo home run by
Andrew Cossetti and an RBI single by
Liam Bendo before an RBI single in the seventh by
Brendan Hueth set the final margin.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Mike Webb earned the win for Rhode Island, allowing two runs on seven hits in five and two-thirds innings.Â
Lucas Rollins took the loss after being charged with seven runs on six hits in five innings.
• Hueth and
Luca Trigiani each notched a pair of hits for the Hawks.
GAME 2: Rhode Island 8, Saint Joseph's 7
HOW IT HAPPENED
• This time, it was Saint Joseph's (16-17 overall, 10-9 Atlantic 10) that took the early lead, as singles by
Brandon Drapeau, Bendo, and
Brett Callahan staked the Hawks to a 4-0 advantage in the top of the first.
• The Rams went ahead after a three-spot in the third and another in the fourth, but a two-run single by Bendo tied the game, 6-6, after five.
• Hueth came through with an RBI single with one out in the sixth to give the Hawks the lead, but it would be short-lived, as a double by Xavier Vargas and a single by Joe Fortin put the Rams on top, 8-7, heading into the seventh.
• The Hawks had a chance in their final at bat, but the tying and go-ahead runs were stranded on second and third to end the game.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Vitaly Jangols allowed two runs on four hits in an inning and two-thirds for the win, while
Alec Rodriguez was charged with two runs on three hits in two innings to take the loss. Zach Fernandez tossed a scoreless seventh for the save.
• Callahan finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, while Bendo knocked in three in the game.
UP NEXT
The teams will play the series finale at Bill Beck Field on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for noon.
