PHILADELPHIA –
Manu Ghigliotti scored two goals as the ninth-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team shut out Penn, 4-0, at Ellen Vagelos Field on Friday afternoon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (5-2) carried the play early in the first quarter before ultimately breaking through with 2:22 to go in the frame.Â
Freke van Tilburg found the back of the cage on a corner, with assists going to
Cassidy Atchison and
Katy Benton.
Â
• Ghigliotti then doubled the lead midway through the second, evading the keeper and slotting home to make it 2-0 with 8:27 remaining. She would net her second of the day six minutes later on a feed from
Lily Santi to send the Hawks into the break with a 3-0 lead.
Â
• After a scoreless third quarter that saw the Hawks down a player for seven minutes due to a pair of cards, Santi would close out the scoring with her first goal of the season on a nifty individual move at the top of the circle with six and a half minutes to play.
Â
• Penn (2-3) had a golden opportunity to get on the board late in the fourth, but
Robin Bleekemolen saved a point-blank opportunity by Sophie Freedman. A penalty stroke was then awarded, which Bleekemolen smothered to preserve the shutout.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• The Hawks outshot the Quakers 18-4 on the day, including a 12-0 mark in the first half.
Â
• Bleekemolen made two saves in the win, while Penn's Sabien Pauman made six stops for the Quakers.
Â
• SJU earned four corners on the day and conceded just two.
