RICHMOND, Va. – Three goals in the third quarter paced the offense as the eighth-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team topped VCU, 3-1, at Cary Street Field on Friday afternoon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Neither team got much of a foothold throughout the first half, with the Rams recording the only shot on goal of the opening 30 minutes.
Â
• Saint Joseph's (7-2 overall, 1-0 Atlantic 10) changed that quickly in the third, ripping off a pair of goals just 74 seconds apart soon after halftime.Â
Manu Ghigliotti opened the scoring with 11:16 to go in the quarter on a pass from
Anna Miller;
Sol Borensztein doubled the advantage shortly after with a rocket under the crossbar.
Â
• Miller then made it 3-0 after three on her third goal of the season with just 11 seconds to go in the stanza.
Â
• VCU (4-3 overall, 1-1 Atlantic 10) got on the board as Maite Sturm tapped in a rebound with a little more than five minutes to play, but that would be all for the scoring on the day.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• The teams were level on shots with eight apiece; SJU held a 5-0 advantage in the third quarter, while VCU held a 4-0 edge in the fourth.
Â
• The Hawks earned five penalty corners on the day to four for the Rams.
Â
•
Robin Bleekemolen made two saves for SJU in the win, while Sasha Elliott made one in defeat for VCU.
Â
• The Rams' fourth-quarter tally ended a 182:30 shutout streak by Bleekemolen and the Hawk defense, dating back to the game against then-#8 Rutgers on September 12.
