MERION STATION, Pa. – The remnants of Hurricane Ian may have drenched the Philadelphia area this weekend, but the storm couldn't rain on the Hawks' parade as the 10th-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team held on for a 1-0 win over #15 Harvard at Ellen Ryan Field on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (8-3) had the early advantage in possession, but the visitors flipped the script midway through the first quarter, registering the only shot in a goalless frame.
• The Hawks earned their first penalty corner of the game midway through the second quarter and made it count, as
Lily Santi inserted and
Katy Benton stopped it for
Freke van Tilburg; van Tilburg sent a ball toward the post that Santi redirected over Ellie Shahbo for a 1-0 lead that the SJU defense made stand through the end of the first half.
• Harvard (7-3) managed just one shot in the second half and did not earn a corner thanks to another outstanding defensive performance from the Hawks. The Crimson pulled Shahbo for an extra field player late in the fourth, but Saint Joseph's maintained a spell of possession that essentially saw off the win.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Saint Joseph's held a 6-5 edge in shots, while the Hawks earned four corners to three for the Crimson.
•
Robin Bleekemolen earned her second solo shutout of the season – the sixth total for the Hawks – with three saves on the day. Shahbo made four in defeat.
• The win is the fourth consecutive shutout for the Hawk defense.
