Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team secured a pair of victories on Sunday, sweeping a doubleheader at UMBC.

In the opener, a three-run double by Brendan Hueth put the Hawks ahead in the fifth en route to a 6-3 win before a pair of home runs by Andrew Cossetti led an offensive onslaught in an 18-5 romp in game two.

GAME 1: Saint Joseph's 6, UMBC 3 (F/7)

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Hawks opened the scoring in the top of the third as Brett Callahan hit an opposite field home run, but the Retrievers hung a three-spot on the board in the bottom of the frame to go ahead.

• In the fifth, Cossetti drew a bases-loaded walk to bring up Hueth, whose bases-clearing double put the Hawks in front, 5-3.

• Nate Thomas plated Callahan with a single in the seventh to extend the lead.

• The Retrievers would put two on and bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the inning, but Alec Rodriguez closed the door to earn his first save of the season.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Rodriguez preserved the win for Luke Smith, who allowed three runs on four hits in four innings.  Sam Davies tossed a pair of shutout innings in relief as well.

• Joe Pucek allowed four runs on five hits in four and two-thirds innings to take the loss for UMBC.

• Callahan and Thomas had two hits apiece for the Hawks, while Callahan scored three times and Hueth drove in a trio.

GAME 2: Saint Joseph's 18, UMBC 5

HOW IT HAPPENED
• UMBC (1-5) took an early lead with two in the first, but the Hawks answered with six in the second to move in front.

• With two down in the frame, Max Hitman singled home Tim Cavanaugh to get the Hawks on the board.  A Luca Trigiani single and a walk to Callahan then loaded the bases for Ryan Cesarini, who made the most of his first collegiate home run with a grand slam to make it a 5-2 lead for the Hawks.

• Two batters later, Cossetti doubled home Thomas to push the lead to four, but the Retrievers would get back within one in the bottom of the inning on a two-run home run and an RBI double.

• Cavanaugh led off the third with a solo home run before Saint Joseph's (4-2) added two more on Cossetti's first longball of the day in the fourth.

• Cesarini and Thomas led off the fifth with singles before Cossetti went deep again to push the lead to 12-5.  Cavanaugh would add a two-run double before a sacrifice fly by Hitman made it 15-5 after seven.

• A wild pitch in the eighth scored Callahan before a two-run double in the ninth by Adam Fine closed out the scoring.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Mike Falco picked up his second win of the season after tossing five and a third shutout innings in relief of starter Ryan Basarab.  Starter Nick Remy took the loss for the Retrievers, allowing five runs on four hits and four walks in an inning and two-thirds.

• Cesarini and Cossetti each notched three hits in the game and combined to drive in 10 runs, while Thomas led the way with four runs scored after reaching base five times in the game.
