RADFORD, Va. – Saint Joseph's baseball has a new home run king.
Andrew Cossetti hit three home runs on Friday as the Hawks swept both ends of a doubleheader against Radford at Carter Memorial Stadium. The first two longballs tied and broke the program's all-time home run record previously set by John Brue in 2016.
GAME 1: Saint Joseph's 14, Radford 12
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (8-4) opened up a first-inning lead after
Nate Thomas singled and later came in to score on an error.
• The Hawks would extend the lead on sacrifice flies by
Conlan Wall and
Brendan Hueth in the second and third, respectively.
• Radford (5-10) answered with a run in the bottom of the third, but the Hawks exploded for four runs in the fifth to open up some breathing room.
Brett Callahan was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before scoring on a single by
Jake Artz to restore the three-run lead; Artz would then score on a sac fly by Thomas to make it a 5-1 game and chase starter Peyton Reesman.
• Cossetti and Hueth greeted reliever William Flanagan with consecutive doubles to plate another run before an infield single by
Liam Bendo scored Hueth to extend the advantage to 7-1.
• The Highlanders would get one back in the bottom of the sixth before scoring four in the seventh to cut the Hawk edge to 7-6.
• The Crimson and Gray answered with four of their own in the top of the eighth as Cossetti hit an opposite-field grand slam for his sixth home run of the season and the program record-tying 30
th of his career.
• Radford went ahead in the bottom of the frame, however, scoring six times to take a 12-11 lead into the ninth.
• The Hawks would not be denied as
Luca Trigiani doubled and came home to tie the game on a single by Wall before Callahan hit a two-run home run to give the Hawks the lead once again.
• The Highlanders would get the tying run to the plate, but
Noah Weber kept the Highlanders off the scoreboard to lock down the victory.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Weber earned the win after allowing two hits and no runs in an inning and a third.
•
Ian McCole got the start for the Hawks and pitched well, allowing two runs on seven hits across six innings. John Holobetz took the loss for Radford, allowing three runs on three hits in one inning.
• Thomas led the Hawks with three hits, while Cossetti's four runs batted in were a game high. Callahan scored three runs in the game as well.
• Each hitter in the Hawk lineup recorded at least one hit in the game.
GAME 2: Saint Joseph's 10, Radford 4
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Hawks once again took the lead in the first inning; this time, it was Cossetti's record-breaking 31
st career home run, with Thomas on first after a two-out walk, that put the Hawks on top, 2-0.
• The Highlanders got one back in the bottom of the inning, but in the third, Thomas went deep for another two-run shot to make it a 4-1 game.
• After another run for the hosts cut the margin to two, Wall went deep for the first time in his career, a three-run shot in the top of the fifth, to push the lead to 7-2.
• A wild pitch in the sixth scored another run before Cossetti hit his second round-tripper of the game and third of the day to make it a 10-2 SJU lead.
• Radford would score two in the eighth, but would get no closer.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
•
Luke Smith improved to 4-0 after tossing six innings and allowing two runs on seven hits. Brandon Feathers allowed three runs and three hits in two and two-thirds innings to take the loss.
• Cossetti posted his second four-RBI game of the day to push his league-leading season total to 25.
• Wall drove in three and joined Callahan, Cossetti, and Thomas in scoring a pair of runs each.
• The Hawks were efficient, scoring 10 runs while leaving just two on base; conversely, the Hawk pitching staff stranded 12 Highlanders on base in the nightcap.
