Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Cincinnati

CINCINNATI – A late rally came up short in the opener, and a five-run first in the nightcap proved too much to overcome as the Saint Joseph's baseball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end in a doubleheader sweep at Cincinnati on Saturday.  Both games were scheduled for seven innings.

GAME 1: Cincinnati 7, Saint Joseph's 6

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Saint Joseph's (10-6) took the early as a first-inning double by Andrew Cossetti and a second-inning single by Brett Callahan staked SJU to a 2-0 lead.

• That's where it stayed until the fourth, when Griffin Merritt hit a grand slam and JP Sponseller hit a two-run double to give the hosts a 6-2 lead.

• The Hawks responded immediately, plating three in the fifth on a two-run double by Brandon Drapeau and an RBI single by Tim Cavanaugh.

• Nate Thomas tied the game in the top half of the sixth with an RBI double, but the Bearcats would ultimately walk it off on a wild pitch with one out in the seventh.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Ryan Steckline allowed one unearned run on one hit in two and a third innings of relief to earn the win for Cincinnati, while David Owsik allowed a run on one hit in an inning and a third to take the loss.

• Callahan, Cossetti, and Thomas each had multi-hit games for the Hawks, while Thomas scored twice.

GAME 2: Cincinnati 12, Saint Joseph's 1

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Cincinnati (8-10) took advantage of three errors and added two hits to score five times in the bottom of the first inning.  The Bearcats then added one in the second and two more in the third to open an 8-0 advantage.

• Justin Igoe doubled with one out in the fifth and came around to score when Max Hitman reached via an error to get the Hawks on the board.

• The Bearcats got the run back in the bottom of the frame and added three more in the sixth to set the final margin.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Beau Keathley allowed a run on three hits while striking out 12 in six innings to earn the win.  Ryan Basarab took the loss after being charged with eight runs – five of them unearned – in two innings.
