LEWISBURG, Pa. – Six multi-run innings and a strong performance from the pitching staff carried the Saint Joseph's baseball team to an 18-2 rout of Bucknell at Depew Field on Tuesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (11-7) jumped in front immediately, plating four in the first and three in the second. A
Brett Callahan single, a
Jake Artz double, and a
Nate Thomas walk loaded the bases for
Andrew Cossetti, who drew a walk of his own to force in the first run.Â
Brendan Hueth followed with a fielder's choice to increase the advantage before
Brandon Drapeau doubled home a pair.
• Callahan then led off the second with a triple and after a walk by Artz, Thomas doubled to score both. Two batters later, a double by Hueth plated another run to make it a 7-0 game.
• Bucknell (6-11) got one back in the bottom of the fourth, but the Hawks blew the game open in the later innings, starting in the sixth, when Hueth singled in a run and Drapeau doubled in two more to make it 10-1.
• The Bison scored on in the bottom of the frame, but a bases-loaded walk by Thomas and a sacrifice fly from Cossetti in the seventh extended the lead to 12-2. In the eighth, a one-out single by
Adam Fine and a fielder's choice by
Conlan Wall each drove in a run.
• The Hawks would tack on four in the ninth courtesy of a single by
Cam Walker, a walk by Fine, a sacrifice fly by Wall, and a double by Thomas.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
•
Matt McShane got the start for the Hawks, tossing three shutout innings and striking out four and allowing a single hit. He combined with
Noah Weber,
David Owsik,
Alec Rodriguez, and
Ryan Devine to scatter eight hits; the quintet also struck out seven batters without issuing a walk.
• Conversely, the Hawks drew 18 walks at the plate, tying a single-game program record set 25 years ago at Delaware State.
• Hueth turned in a three-hit game, while Callahan, Drapeau, and Thomas also had multi-hit performances. Drapeau and Thomas drove in four runs each, while Hueth added three RBI as well. Thomas and
Tim Cavanaugh each drew a game-high three free passes.
• Each of the Hawks' starting nine reached base safely in the game.
