PHILADELPHIA – The USciences softball team began its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) campaign splitting with Goldey-Beacom, 5-1 and 1-9, at Urban Youth Academy Filed in FDR Park on Wednesday.
Game One
A second inning run was the lone blemish against starter Megan Master, who went the distance for a second straight complete-game win. She worked around seven hits to surrender the one run, striking out three with two walks.
University of the Sciences was trailing until Gabrielle Simms' leadoff triple in the third led to her scoring on Ashley Steiner's sacrifice fly.
The Devils then took the lead for good with a two-run fourth, which got going with Kaitlin Thompson's one-out single. The second out was recorded but Simms kept the frame alive with a walk, which led to back-to-back RBI singles by Abbigail Markee and Steiner.
University of the Sciences added two unearned runs in the sixth.
Four Devils had multiple base knocks, highlighted by Thompson's first career multi-hit performance.
Simms reached base three times, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored, while Steiner went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Simms is now tied for fourth in program history with 77 career runs, as well as tied for seventh all-time with nine triples.
Nina Cencetti also had two hits, including a double.
Game Two
The game was 1-0 entering the fifth as starter Paige Schlechter allowed just two hits through the first four innings before Goldey-Beacom broke out for eighth runs in the fifth.
University of the Sciences stranded a runner in each of its four at-bats, including one in scoring position twice.
Lauren Del Giudice plated the Devils' lone run with an inside-the-park home in the fifth, her first homer
