Softball Opens Season in Florida on Friday

WINTER HAVEN, Fla – The University of the Sciences softball team opened its season in the Sunshine State on Friday, facing two teams that were already at the tail-end of their respective spring break trips.

The Devils dropped contests to Findlay, 9-1 in six innings, and defending NCAA Tournament participant Bridgeport, 5-0.

Findlay

Diane Torregrossa's RBI groundout in the top of the third cut a 2-0 deficit in half, but USciences would strand two runners in scoring position before Findlay answered with a three-run bottom-half.

The Oilers (8-5) added three runs in the fifth before ending the game early with one more in the sixth.

Gabrielle Simms (two walks) and Danielle Jones (1-for-2 with a walk) both reached based twice for the Devils.

Bridgeport

Bridgeport (9-4) plated two in top of the first as it led throughout.

Those were the only two earned runs that starter Paige Schlechter allowed in her five innings, as she gave up just four hits while striking out five.

Up Next

The Devils continue a stretch of 12 games in seven days tomorrow, when they take on Winona St. at 1:30 p.m. and American International at 3:45 p.m
