Box Score 2 AUBURNDALE, Fla. – A nine-run third propelled the USciences baseball team to a doubleheader split down in Florida, as the Devils exacted revenge on D'Youville, 16-7, before falling to nationally-ranked Minnesota Mankato in their second game.
D'Youville
Both teams had one big inning thanks in large part due to an error, as D'Youville opened the scoring with a five-run top of the first before USciences struck back with the nine-run third.
The Saints plated the five runs without a hit, instead taking advantage of five walks, one hit-by-pitch and an error to score four unearned runs.
Neither team threated again until the bottom of the third, when University of the Sciences broke out with six hits.
Frank Pollock got it all started with a leadoff single and after a AJ Pena walk and Joe Duffy single loaded the bases, an Eddie Parry base on balls got the Devils on the board.
Evan Sinclair followed with a two-RBI single before the second out was recorded.
Hunter Parish walked to load the bases once more though, and an error then opened the floodgates.
That error allowed the first two of six unearned runs to cross, with Eli Agostini and Chris Anderson walks sandwiching a second Pollock single in the inning that broke the 5-5 tie.
Pena followed with another RBI single, before Duffy added a two-RBI single for his second base-knock of the frame as well.
Starter Ian Glass worked a third consecutive scoreless frame to cap four innings in which he gave up just one hit and the one earned run. He struck out six but struggled with eight base on balls.
An Anderson leadoff single in the fifth led to two runs, on an Estrada walk and Parish hit by pitch, that cancelled out D'Youville runs in the fifth and sixth (unearned).
Reliever Ryan Hess stranded runners in scoring position to escape any further in both the fifth and sixth, before stranding the bases loaded in the top of the seventh to put a stamp on three innings of relief in which he allowed just one earned run to earn his first career win.
USciences plated five more across its final two at-bats, and Estrada kept D'Youville off the board after surrendering a lone hit in his two frames.
Duffy and Pollock both went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two hits in the third, with Duffy adding three RBI, two stolen bases and a walk.
The senior is now tied for seventh in program history with 25 stolen bases, and is 10th all-time with 75 runs scored.
Pena and Parry also reached base three times while scoring multiple runs, as Pena now has six straight two-hit games.
Sinclair joined Duffy in driving in three runs.
Minnesota Mankato
Duffy had two of USciences' three hits as he finished a perfect 2-for-2, capping a day in which he went 5-for-7.
Sebastian Spahn notably made his collegiate debut on the mound.
