PHILADEPHIA – The USciences softball team swept a second straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent, jumping on Nyack early in both games while nearly shutting out the Warriors, 9-1 and 9-0, on Saturday afternoon at UYA Field in FDR Park.
University of the Sciences softball last won four games in a row from April 17-19, 2014.
Megan Master and Paige Schlechter combined to not allow an earned run in 11 innings, while Taylor Hamm had a near-perfect day at the plate, finishing 4-for-5 with a home run, walk, four runs and three RBI.
Game One
University of the Sciences scored four in the first and was in control throughout.
Abbigail Markee walked with one out and four consecutive singles by Ashley Steiner, Hamm, Gabriella Polera and Danielle Jones made the score 3-0, before Nina Cencetti closed out the scoring with an RBI groundout.
That was more than enough run support for Master, whose lone blemish in a second consecutive complete-game victory was an unearned run in the fifth. She scattered six hits with one strikeout and one walk.
Steiner led the offense with her second career three-hit game, while Hamm, Polera, Cencetti and Miranda Rodriguez all added two base-knocks.
Hamm finished with two RBI and two runs, while Steiner scored twice and Cencetti had two RBI.
Markee also scored twice as she reached via a hit and a base on balls.
Game Two
This time it was a five-run second that put USciences ahead early.
It was Hamm who got it started with a single, and a Cenetti double and Hannah Higgins walk loaded the bases.
Elizabeth Grant and Lauren Del Giudice both singled home runs, before Simms cleared the bases with a double.
Schlechter earned a second straight win as she allowed just three baserunners to reach, while retiring the final nine batters she faced.
Hamm, Grant and Del Giudice all finished a perfect 2-for-2, with Hamm hitting her first home run of the season, Grant scoring a career-high two runs, and Del Giudice tying a career-best with three RBI.
Simms also had two hits, to go along with four RBI, while Rodriguez scored twice and Markee walked twice.
Simms' bases-clearing double was the 26th of her career, now second in program history, while Hamm's home run was the sixth of her career, now tied for sixth all-time.
