ORLANDO, Fla. – Stow Weiss earned a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3) victory in the second singles flight to clinch the win as the 12^th-seeded Saint Joseph's women's tennis team knocked off fifth-seeded Dayton, 4-3, in the opening round of the 2022 Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship at the USTA National Campus.
 
The Hawks advance to the quarterfinals, where they will meet fourth-seeded Davidson on Thursday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Dayton got on the board first by virtue of winning the doubles point.  In the first flight, Weiss and Amanda Nava secured a 6-4 win, but the Flyers won the second and third to secure the point.
 
• Saint Joseph's went ahead as singles play got underway with Fabiana Tort-Umpierre cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win in the fifth before Nava secured a 6-1, 6-2 win in the first.
 
• The Flyers rallied with wins in the third and fourth flights, but Ireland Amato's 7-5, 6-3 win in the sixth flight tied the match with Weiss still on the court.
 
• After taking the first set and dropping the second, Weiss came through in the tiebreak to set off a celebration and put the Hawks into the quarterfinals.
 
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• The Hawks have reached the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship for the first time since 2014.
 
• Nava's win tied her with Casey Robinson for the most top-flight singles wins in program history with 52.
