MERION STATION, Pa. – Five home runs helped lead the Saint Joseph's baseball team past Lehigh, 15-11, at Smithson Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (14-12) went in front in the first inning after
Brett Callahan led off with a triple and
Nate Thomas sent a rocket through the bullpen in right field to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
Â
• The visitors got one back in the top of the second, but the Hawks responded with a seven-run inning. Callahan singled home
Liam Bendo and
Brandon Drapeau to make it a 4-1 game before
Jake Artz hit the first home run of his career, a no-doubter to left, to make it 7-1.
Â
• Thomas would then draw a walk and eventually come around to score on a wild pitch before an RBI groundout by
Brendan Hueth plated
Andrew Cossetti and pushed the margin to 9-1.
Â
• Lehigh (15-14) scored three in the third on back-to-back home runs and one in the fourth, but Cossetti launched his Atlantic 10-leading 13
th home run of the season to left to make it 10-5 after four.
Â
• The Mountain Hawks staged a rally in the fifth, cutting the lead to a pair at 10-8, but the Crimson and Gray got some breathing room in the seventh after a two-run home run by Drapeau and a three-run shot from Callahan.
Â
• Lehigh scored three times in the eighth, but would draw no closer.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Callahan was 4-for-5 on the day with three runs scored and five driven in to lead all hitters; Cossetti, Drapeau, Thomas, and
Ryan Cesarini each scored a pair while Artz tallied three runs batted in. Drapeau added three hits on the afternoon as well.
Â
• Every hitter in the Hawks' starting lineup reached base in the contest.
Â
• The five home runs are one shy of the program record for a single game, set in the season opener last season at Towson.
Â
•
Mike Picollo earned the win for the Hawks, while Najir Glenn took the loss.
