Baseball Drops Home Finale to Davidson, 8-7

MERION STATION, Pa. – A ninth-inning rally fell agonizingly short on Saturday as the Saint Joseph's baseball team fell to Davidson, 8-7, in the Hawks' final game at Smithson Field for 2022.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Davidson (40-9 overall, 18-3 Atlantic 10) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI double by John Hosmer and a sacrifice fly by Jacob Wilhoit.  Hosmer then added to the lead with a solo home run in fourth.

• An RBI double from Brendan Hueth in the bottom of the fourth got the Hawks on the board before a leadoff home run from Max Hitman to start the fifth made it a one-run game.

• Saint Joseph's (25-22 overall, 9-11 Atlantic 10) took the lead in the sixth after Hueth singled and stole second before Tim Cavanaugh ripped a go-ahead two-run shot to left to put the Hawks on top, 4-3.

• The Wildcats responded with a five-spot in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run from Michael Carico, a single by Jacob Hinderleider, and a two-run double by Hosmer.

• Hueth kept the Hawks in it with a three-run home run in the bottom of the frame to get the Crimson and Gray back within a run.

• After Davidson left the bases loaded in the top of the ninth, Andrew Cossetti hit a one-out single before walks to Hueth and Cavanaugh loaded the bases.  Two batters later, Hitman's outfield-bound line drive was snared by Wilhoit at second to end the ballgame.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Gabe Levy allowed three runs on three hits in an inning and a third of relief to earn the win, while Will Schomberg tossed two shutout innings to finish off the game for his second save.  Ryan Devine took the loss for the Hawks, falling to 2-4.

• Cavanaugh, Cossetti, and Hueth each had three hits in the game, with Hueth driving in four runs and scoring two while Cavanaugh drove in a pair.

• Hueth's sixth-inning stolen base was the 52nd of his career, tying the program's all-time record.

• Saturday marked the annual Senior Day celebration, where the Hawks honored managers Rylan Domingues and Stephen O'Malley and student-athletes Andrew Cossetti, Mike Falco, Ian McCole, Nate Thomas, and Noah Weber in a pregame ceremony.
