OLEAN, N.Y. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team battled back from a four-run deficit to beat St. Bonaventure, 9-6, at Fred Handler Park on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Hawks clinched a berth in the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship, to begin on Tuesday at Davidson.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Hawks picked up where they left off yesterday, plating a pair in the first to take an early lead.
Brett Callahan led off with a double and scored on a double by
Nate Thomas, who came around himself on a
Brendan Hueth single.
• St. Bonaventure (5-38 overall, 3-20 Atlantic 10) stormed back, getting one back in the bottom of the second before hanging five on the board in the third.
• Saint Joseph's (27-23 overall, 11-11 Atlantic 10) began chipping away at the deficit immediately, as an RBI single by Callahan and a bases-loaded walk to Thomas cut the margin in half after four, and a two-out double in the fifth by LIam Bendo was followed by another RBI single from Callahan that tied the game at 6-6.
• The Hawks went ahead for good in the seventh. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for Bendo, who singled in a pair to put SJU on top, 8-6. Callahan then added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly.
• The bullpen took over from there, with
Sam Davies allowing just a walk in two innings and
Ryan Devine tossing a perfect ninth to close out the win and send the Hawks to the postseason.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
•
Matt McShane tossed three and two-thirds innings of shutout relief to earn the win, while Kyle Caringi allowed three runs in two and a third innings to take the loss. Neither starter figured into the decision, with SJU's
Luke Smith tossing two and a third innings and the Bonnies' Luke Roggenburk going four and two-thirds.
• Bendo and Callahan each had three hits and drove in three runs on the day, with Thomas chipping in with a pair of RBI as well.
Luca Trigiani scored three times, while Bendo crossed the plate twice.
• The win assures the Hawks a place in the top seven of the final Atlantic 10 standings and a berth in the Atlantic 10 Championship. It will be the second consecutive appearance in the postseason for the Hawks; Saint Joseph's last made back-to-back conference tournament appearances in 1979 and 1980 as a member of the East Coast Conference.
