PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP, Pa. – A pair of Saint Joseph's baseball program records were matched on Wednesday afternoon as the Hawks rallied from an early seven-run deficit and used a seven-run ninth inning to stun Villanova, 14-9, at Villanova Ballpark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Villanova (17-22-1) opened the scoring with a run in the first inning, but an RBI single from
Travis Rinker tied it in the top of the second.
• The bottom of the third saw the Wildcats plate seven on the back of four hits, three errors, and two walks to take an 8-1 lead.
• Saint Joseph's (25-17) began to chip away immediately, scoring three times in the fourth as
Brendan Hueth drove home
Andrew Cossetti with a double before
Brett Callahan and
Jake Artz drew consecutive bases-loaded walks to make it 8-4.
•
Brandon Drapeau hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth but the Wildcats got one back in the sixth to restore their four-run lead. Artz and
Nate Thomas would add sac flies in the eighth to get the Hawks back within a pair to set up the dramatic ninth.
• A pair of one-out walks and a single loaded the bases, and after a strikeout left the Hawks down to their final out, Thomas drew a four-pitch walk to force in a run.  Cossetti was then hit by a pitch to bring home the tying run.
• Hueth followed with a two-run single to give Saint Joseph's its first lead of the game before singles by Drapeau and
Tim Cavanaugh plated three more to cap off the seven-run ninth.
• The Wildcats got the leadoff man aboard in the ninth, but a strikeout and a double play ended the ballgame and sealed the comeback victory.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
•
Sam Davies tossed a shutout inning for his first collegiate victory, while Danny Wilkinson was charged with the loss.
• Hueth went 6-for-6 on the day, tying the program record for hits in a game set by Collin Forgey in the 2014 Liberty Bell Classic championship game. He added three runs scored and three runs batted in.
• Cossetti's RBI in the ninth was his 56th of the season, tying Jason Hamilton's single-season program best set in 1991. He also scored three times while extending his program-record on-base streak to 47 games.
• Wednesday's game is the 10th this season in which the Hawks have rapped out 15 hits or more and the 17th time that SJU has reached double digits in runs scored.
