MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Sunday, falling to Saint Louis in a pair of games at Smithson Field.
Â
GAME 1: Saint Louis 12, Saint Joseph's 10
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (25-19 overall, 9-8 Atlantic 10) came out of the gates swinging, sending 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first.Â
Brett Callahan led off with a single before one-out walks to
Nate Thomas and
Andrew Cossetti loaded the bases for
Brendan Hueth; Hueth hit a double to left that plated two and got the Hawks on the board.
Â
• Two batters later,
Brandon Drapeau singled home a pair to double the lead.Â
Luca Trigiani,
Liam Bendo, and Callahan all followed with singles to push the lead to 6-0 after an inning.
Â
• Thomas then led off the second with a single and came around to score on a hit by
Tim Cavanaugh to make it 7-0.
Â
• The Billikens scored once in the fourth before tying the game with a six-spot of their own in the sixth. The tie would be short-lived, however, as the Hawks scored three in the bottom of the inning when Cavanaugh was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Trigiani ripped a two-run single to left.
Â
• The visitors scored twice to make it a one-run game heading to the ninth, where they tallied three more to complete the comeback.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Logan Schmitt tossed two shutout innings of relief to earn the win, while Cameron Pferrer retired the only two batters he faced for the save.Â
Ryan Devine was charged with the loss.
Â
• Five Hawks notched multiple hits in the game, with Callahan's 4-for-5 performance leading the way. The Hawks also had three players with two runs scored and four with two driven in.

Â
• The Hawks threatened in the sixth before cashing in in the eighth as Cavanaugh singled home Hueth.
Â
• The game was called at the end of eight innings due to travel considerations.
