#12 Field Hockey Romps Past Delaware, 6-0

NEWARK, Del. – Leigh James scored twice and Lily Santi tallied four points as the 12th-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team routed Delaware, 6-0, at Rullo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• After a cagey start to the game, Saint Joseph's (6-3) broke through late in the first quarter after Manu Ghigliotti fired high over UD's Lizzie Gaebel for a 1-0 lead.

• Delaware (1-8) would earn four corners and pepper the cage with five shots in the second quarter, but it was the Hawks that tallied the only score as Lily Santi dribbled in and found Leigh James in front to double the lead heading into halftime.

• The Hawks took over in the second half, as James took a feed from Maaike Gorissen and tucked it home for her second of the day just two and a half minutes into the third quarter.

• With eight seconds to go in the quarter, SJU earned its first corner of the day and made it count as Freke van Tilburg scored on assists from Santi and Kate Crist to make it 4-0 heading to the final 15 minutes.

• Santi scored one herself late in the fourth as Noa Schuringa sent a ball just in front of the outstretched pad of substitute keeper Eve Vickery that Santi put into the open cage for a 5-0 advantage.

• In the closing seconds, the Hawks converted on their second corner as Anna Miller inserted and then fired a pass from van Tilburg high into the cage to close out the scoring.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• The Hawks outshot the Blue Hens 12-8 on the day, including a 9-2 margin in the second half.  Delaware earned seven penalty corners, while the Hawks had only two, but cashed in on both opportunities.

• Gaebel made one save in defeat, while Vickery added two.  Both Robin Bleekemolen and Janelle Ward made a stop apiece in a combined shutout effort.

• The six goals are a season-high for Saint Joseph's on the offensive end, while the Hawk defense pitched a pair of shutouts in two games this weekend.

HAWK TALK
"I couldn't be more proud of our team for finishing the weekend strong," head coach Hannah Prince said.  "Our theme this week was a Bill Belichick original: 'Do your job.'  All week we locked in on the details to help make today as clean as it was on attach.  It was great to rotate in some new faces and bring a spark in the second half.  Our full focus now turns to preparation for Richmond on Friday, a conference rival that deserves a ton of respect."
