Big First Quarter Powers #10 Field Hockey Past Richmond, 6-0

MERION STATION, Pa. – Three goals in the first quarter set the pace as the 10th-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team flew past Richmond, 6-0, at Ellen Ryan Field on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (7-3 overall, 3-0 Atlantic 10) wasted no time getting down to business as Manu Ghigliotti fired a shot that was saved by the Spiders' Erika Latta.  Lily Santi was there for the rebound to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead after just 51 seconds.

• A similar play unfolded about five minutes later; this time it was Maaike Gorissen's effort that was stopped before Hailey Bitters followed up for a 2-0 lead.

• Two minutes after that, Freke van Tilburg sent a ball in toward the cage on a corner; inserter Celeste Smits was there at the post to redirect it home and give the Hawks a 3-0 lead after the opening stanza.

• A scoreless second quarter left the margin at three heading into halftime, but Ghigliotti got herself on the scoresheet on another corner pass from van Tilburg midway through the third to make it a 4-0 game.

• Santi bagged her second of the day on a loose ball at the top of the circle early in the fourth before Julianna Smyth scored her first career goal, taking a pass on a two-on-one from Aiden Drabick, to close out the scoring.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• The Hawks outshot Richmond (5-5 overall, 2-1 Atlantic 10) by an 18-6 margin, including a 13-2 gap over the final three qusrters.  SJU earned nine corners on the day, scoring as a result of three of them, while conceding four.
