AMHERST, Mass. –
Lily Santi converted a penalty stroke a minute-plus into the second overtime period to lift the 14th-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team over 19th-ranked UMass, 2-1, at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (10-3 overall, 4-0 Atlantic 10) dominated the opening quarter, but it wasn't until the second that the Hawks got on the board. Midway through the frame,
Sol Borensztein sent a pass toward the cage from the right wing;
Alison Buffington was there and sent it past Myrte van Herwijnen to give SJU a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
• UMass (7-6 overall, 2-2 Atlantic 10) was the aggressor in the third quarter, pressuring the Hawk defense that spend a significant portion of the stanza shorthanded due to green and yellow cards. It finally paid off for the hosts as Emilie Keij converted on a penalty corner with just under two minutes to play to tie the score.
• The Hawks notched all four shots that were recorded in the fourth quarter but could not find a winner. After a back-and-forth first overtime, the Hawks took possession early in the second and a Minutewoman foul in the circle set up Santi for the winning penalty stroke.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Saint Joseph's outshot UMass, 16-8, and also earned 11 corners while conceding five. Van Herwijnen made six saves for the Minutewomen, while
Janelle Ward made two stops for the Hawks.
• The goal was the first in a Hawk uniform for Buffington.
• The game was the second consecutive regular season game between the two teams in Amherst to go to overtime; UMass earned a 1-0 win on October 15, 2021.
