CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A goal in the dying embers of the third quarter provided all the offense as the 14th-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team fell to #13 Harvard, 1-0, at Berylson Field on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (10-4) had the better of things in the first quarter, taking three of the four total shots recorded. SJU also notched a pair of penalty corners in the opening stanza.
• The Hawks continued to control play until the midpoint of the second quarter, when the hosts would earn four corners in quick succession. In the end, both defenses held firm and the teams went into halftime level.
• Harvard (9-3) was on the front foot coming out of the break, outshooting the Hawks 3-0 in the third quarter. It was the last of those attempts, off the stick of Emily Guckian, that gave the Crimson a 1-0 lead with 17 seconds to go in the frame.
• SJU would have chances in the fourth, including three penalty corners, and would play the final five minutes with an extra attacker. The Hawks were awarded a penalty stroke with 3:22 to play, but after a seemingly interminable video review, the call was overturned, and one final penalty corner did not provide the equalizer.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Both teams notched nine shots and seven corners on the day;
Janelle Ward made two saves for the Hawks, while Tessa Shahbo had four for the Crimson.
• The only previous meeting between the teams came 371 days ago at Ellen Ryan Field, when the 10th-ranked Hawks beat the 15th-ranked Crimson, 1-0, on a goal by
Lily Santi.
