LEXINGTON, Ky. – Saint Joseph's
Erik Reynolds II scored a game-high 28 points, but #16 Kentucky outlasted the Hawks, 96-88, in overtime on Monday at Rupp Arena.
How It Happened
• Saint Joseph's jumped out to an early five-point lead as a putback by
Rasheer Fleming made it 7-2 less than two minutes into the contest.
• The Wildcats grabbed their first lead, 20-17, on a transition three-pointer by Rob Dillingham at 10:44.
• The Hawks fought back to tie the game at 27-27 on a three-pointer by
Erik Reynolds II.
• Kentucky responded with an 8-0 run to open a 35-27 edge.
• A three-pointer by Reynolds II tied the game at 38-38 with :37.9 to go in the half.
• The Wildcats' Tre Mitchell connected on a three-pointer to give Kentucky a 41-38 lead at the break.
• St. Joe's
Christ Essandoko scored in the paint to open the half and bring the Hawks to within 41-40.
• Kentucky answered with eight straight points to take a 49-40 lead on a three-pointer by Antonio Reeves at 17:27.
• The Hawks cut the Wildcats' lead to 46-41 on a three-pointer by
Anthony Finkley.
• Kentucky opened a nine-point lead, 55-46, but back-to-back three-pointers by Reynolds II brought Saint Joseph's to within 55-52.
• The Wildcats built their lead back to eight, 67-59, but Saint Joseph's chipped away.
• Methodically attacking the offensive end, the Hawks regained the lead, 76-75, on a three-pointer by
Cameron Brown with :44 to go.
• A dunk by Mitchell put Kentucky ahead again, 77-76.
• On the next possession, Essandoko was fouled and hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 77 with :14.2 left, and St. Joe's got a defensive stop to force overtime.
• The Wildcats outscored the Hawks 6-2 to open the extra frame, taking an 83-79 lead on Mitchell three-pointer.
• Kentucky pushed ahead by as many as six, but Saint Joseph's refused to quit as a pair of free throws by Reynolds II made it 89-86 with :41 left.
• That would be as close as the Hawks would get, though, as the Wildcats scored seven of the final nine points.
