Women’s Tennis Rallies Past Delaware State in 4-3 Thriller

2/18/2023 11:45:00 PM

PHILADELPHIAFabiana Tort-Umpierre rallied from a set down in the clinching match as the Saint Joseph's women's tennis team rallied from a 3-1 deficit to top Delaware State, 4-3, at the Legacy Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Delaware State (1-4-1) took the early lead via a three-match sweep of the doubles point.

• Saint Joseph's (2-1) drew level after Stow Weiss dropped just two games en route to a 6-2, 6-0 win in the top singles flight, but the Hornets stung the Hawks with straight-sets wins in the second and third flights to move to the brink of the overall victory.

• The Hawks clawed back into the match after Emily Elliott rolled to a dominant 6-2, 6-0 win in the sixth flight; Sophia Amato sealed a 6-2, 7-5 win in the fifth to tie the match at three apiece.

• Tort-Umpierre dropped the first set of her fourth-flight match before rallying to claim the second and force a decisive third set.  The final match remaining on court provided consistent drama, with each player breaking the other's serve in a back-and-forth set, but it would be Tort-Umpierre who broke Klaudija Lisovska at 5-5 before serving out the match for a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 triumph.

HAWK TALK
"When we can pull out a win at this stage of the season against a team that is more match-fit and on paper should beat us, and after being swept in the doubles, then all I can say is, 'wow, what a match,'" head coach Ian Crookenden said.  "A great singles display from seniors Stow Weiss, Sophia Amato, and Emily Elliott, and a fantastic three-set win by junior Fabiana Tort-Umpierre after an opening-set loss.  This squad has heart and grit and I couldn't be more proud of their fight."

UP NEXT
The Hawks will take on Mount St. Mary's at Legacy on February 25.
