DURHAM, N.C. –
Ryan Cesarini's RBI fielder's choice in the top of the 10th inning brought home the winning run as the Saint Joseph's baseball team notched its first win of the season with a 5-4 triumph over Duke at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (1-2) opened up a lead in the top of the second as
Carter Jagiela singled for his first career run batted in to bring home
Brandon Drapeau.
• The Hawks extended the lead in the third after hits by
Max Hitman and Drapeau;
Brett Callahan followed with a two-run double to make it a 3-0 game.
• Hitman tripled in the top of the fourth and came home on a wild pitch to extend the advantage to four.
• Duke (2-1) got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Alex Mooney doubled with a runner on for the Blue Devils' first hit of the game; after a balk brought in a run, Luke Storm hit a two-run home run to cut the Hawk lead to 4-3.
• That's where it remained until the bottom of the ninth. With two outs and a man on first, pinch hitter Devin Obee hit a bloop double to right to score the tying run and send the game to extra innings.
• With one out in the top of the 10th, Jagiela hit an infield single and eventually made his way to third base on a single by
Conlan Wall. Cesarini's grounder to short led to a force at second, but the relay was not in time and Jagiela came home to put the Hawks ahead.
•
Cole Stetzar came on in the bottom of the frame and worked around a two-out single, punching out Damon Lux to finish off the save.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
•
David Owsik got the start on the mound for Saint Joseph's, and he was stellar on Sunday, tossing five no-hit innings and fanning three while allowing just one walk and one hit batsman, both in the fifth inning.
•
Luke Gabrysh earned the win, as he was charged with one run on one hit in three innings; Charlie Beilenson took the loss for Duke, the last of eight pitchers the Blue Devils used on Sunday.
• Wall, Hitman, Callahan, and Jagiela all notched a pair of hits on the day, with Hitman adding a pair of runs scored.
• The Hawks held the Blue Devils to just four hits on the day.
UP NEXT
