PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Saint Joseph's University baseball team dropped its first midweek contest of the season, falling by a 6-3 score at Rutgers on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Rutgers (3-4) took the lead on a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the first, but the Hawks answered with a pair in the top of the second. After walks to
Nate Thomas and
Brandon Drapeau to start the inning and a sacrifice bunt by
Ryan Cesarini,
Justin Igoe ripped a double down the right field line to score both runs and tie the game.
Â
• Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, the Scarlet Knights would answer with a four-spot in the bottom of the frame on four hits and a sacrifice fly.
Â
• Saint Joseph's (1-3) threatened in the fifth and sixth before a
Brett Callahan home run in the ninth set the final margin.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Wyatt Parliament earned the win with three innings of shutout relief for the Scarlet Knights, while SJU starter
Luke Gabrysh took the loss. Ben Gorski earned a three-inning save.
Â
• Callahan enjoyed a two-hit day for the Hawks, while Igoe was on base three times.
Â
• After the early Rutgers offense, the Hawk pitching staff settled in and allowed just three base runners over the final six and a third innings.Â
Ryan DeSanto made his collegiate debut on Wednesday and retired all seven batters he faced, while
Mike Picollo had a six-up, six-down outing as well.
