Baseball Falls to Notre Dame in Heartbreaker, 10-9

Box Score HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team fell in heartbreaking fashion on Wednesday, dropping a 10-9 result to Notre Dame at Ting Stadium.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Notre Dame (8-6) took the lead in the bottom of the second on a single by Estevan Moreno.
 
• Saint Joseph's (4-8) answered in the third after Travis Rinker led off with a single and came in to score on a double by Brett Callahan.
 
• The Hawks went ahead in the top of the fifth after Luca Trigiani doubled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Callahan.
 
• The Fighting Irish took the lead back in the bottom of the inning with a four-spot, but the Hawks got back within one in the top of the sixth after Ryan Weingartner singled and Ryan Picollo homered to make it a 5-4 game.
 
• Notre Dame answered with one in the bottom of the inning, but the Hawks hung five on the board in the seventh.  With runners on second and third and one out, Conlan Wall ripped a single to right to plate Rinker and Trigiani and tie the game.
 
• After a pinch single by Colin Myers, Nate Thomas followed with a three-run home run to put the Hawks on top, 9-6.
 
• The Irish drew level in the eighth on a pair of home runs, and scored the winning run on a hit batsman with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth.
 
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Sammy Cooper tossed a shutout inning of relief to earn the win and improve to 1-0, while Alec Rodriguez took the loss after one run in an inning-plus of work.
 
• Mike Picollo got the start for the Hawks and allowed a run on four hits in three and a third innings, while Notre Dame starter David Lally allowed a run on two hits in two and two-thirds innings.
 
• Thomas and ND's Danny Neri both drove in three runs on the day; Callahan, Picollo, and Wall had two RBI apiece for SJU as well.
 
• Myers and Weingartner recorded two hits apiece for the Hawks.
 
UP NEXT
The Hawks return home for the first of seven consecutive games at Smithson Field when they host Iona at 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
